Now in it’s 26th year, the Spruill Gallery Holiday Artists Market features a variety of handcrafted pieces all made by local artists. We have over 40 artists featured in the market this year and want to introduce all of our unique artists.
Meet one of our new artists Valee Sewell Penn. She is a Children’s Book Author/Illustrator who grew up in Atlanta.
Spruill: How did you first get started in your chosen craft or art form?
Valee: I began keeping a sketchbook to record my travels and memories of my favorite places. I decided it would be fun to incorporate imaged of my 2 newly adopted cats into these images. I turned some of these color pencil and pen sketches into watercolor and pen paintings, and the book “Indy and Spot Come to Earth” was born!
Spruill: What do you like best about your chosen craft or art form?
Valee: I love the freedom and joy of keeping a sketchbook in pen and watercolor to jot down memories and moments. These entries connect me so much more to the experience and the moment than taking a photo. There is one entry I particularly treasure, it is a watercolor of the last cup of coffee my Dad brought to me before he passed away very unexpectedly.
Spruill: How important do you feel handmade is in our world?
Valee: I feel handmade things are very important in today’s mass produced / disposable world. Hand made things are personal in an impersonal world.
Spruill: What is your favorite thing about the Holidays?
Valee: I love the time of being together with friends and family, and helping those who are less fortunate. Bringing joy and sharing with others (time, food, gifts or whatever) is the best!
Spruill: Do you a website?
Valee: Yes – valeepennpaintings.com
