Introduction to Hand Coloring

Students should plan on bringing the following:

$15 darkroom fee (to be paid to Instructor).   In the workshop, we will spend one day hand coloring a portrait, and one day hand coloring a landscape.    I will print each student a set of these prior to class, so you will NOT need to bring prints – they will be waiting on you when you arrive.

Color wheel – available at any art supply store, including Hobby Lobby and Michael's, or online at Dick Blick or Pearl's (allow shipping time when ordering online!)

Set of photo oil tubes   I recommend the Marshall's "Learn to Color" oil set for $28.99 at Freestyle Photographic Supplies.

There are many art supply retailers that carry the photo oils, but this is the least expensive pricing I’ve seen.   Their web site is: http://www.freestylephoto.biz/ and their phone # is: 800-292-6137.    (When online, under "categories" select Spotting and Handcoloring.)

Each "Learn to Color" set comes with 9 tubes of oils, plus contains the "extras" you will need like PM Solution, extra cotton, and skewers.

NOTE:  There are several other Marshall's photo oil sets available that contain more tubes, so feel free to "buy up" if you'd like.    Purchased individually, each oil tube generally retails for around $10, so buying sets of oil tubes is always the cheapest way to go.

* While not particularly needed for the workshop, photo oil pencils by Marshall's are wonderful tools, and are made to complement the tube oils.   If you wish to add to your arsenal, they are very helpful.    (NOTE: Avoid the Tropical and Metallic pencil sets for this workshop!)
