Please bring the following to class:

  • Cabochon, oval or round, 10-20mm diameter or larger, hard material such as quartz, jasper, agate, chalcedony
     

  • Faceted stone, 10mm per side or larger, square, trillion, or other shape with sharp corners. Recommended materials: quartz (clear, amethyst, citrine), beryl, garnet, topaz or a good synthetic. The important thing is to use a hard material (mohs hardness of 7 or above) that is not too expensive, since this is for practice and not necessarily a finished piece.   • Sharpie fine point marker

  • Optivisors or other magnifying glasses. You WILL need to see small things up close!

  • Safety goggles for grinding tools


These necessary items will be available at JFF:

  • Sterling silver sheet, 24 ga., 2 x 4 inches

  • Misc. sterling sheet and wire for ornamentation and findings

  • #42 flat graver, carbon steel, Swiss

  • Wood handle for graver, small flat-sided mushroom

The following are optional but you will probably want them:

  • Creative Stone Setting by John Cogswell (If you are not a good note taker, most of the info in this class can be found in this book

  • Pair of dividers

  • Half round, half flat all metal pliers

  • Square and triangular needle files

  • Barrette needle files, coarse (#0) and fine (#4)
  • Hex key 5-8mm diameter with 2.5-3” length on long side to make your own planishing tool
  • Diamond needle file set, for filing steel, Harbor Freight has them for cheap. Go to store or order on line.
