Mosaics for the Purist
Instructor: Sandra Nissen

Mosaics for the Purist (With a little hand building)
Fridays  10 to 12:30

Sesssion 1 - At the first class we will have an introduction to mosaics and the Spruill Art Center Clay Studio procedures.  You will receive a supply list and choose your clay for making tiles today.  I will demonstrate rolling a flat slab and you will begin to design a stepping stone or planter, our first project.

This is a ‘purists’ class as we make almost everything that goes into our projects.  This gives you a more complete class because you will learn about the properties of clay and glazes of the tiles which go into your mosaic work.  It also gives you more control because you have broadened what is available to you to use in your mosaics.

Throughout the class I will bring in an assortment of both finished mosaic pieces as well as showing a variety of hand building projects you may want to make to use for your own unique mosaics.

Session 2 - Today we will discuss glazing as well as where things go in the kiln room for the next step of firing the clay.  Finish making the pieces for your first project.  I will also demonstrate nipping and adhering clay tiles to a stepping stone.

Session 3 - Choices of grout, how the colour can affect your piece and how to apply it the  stepping stone.

Session 4 - For outdoor and functional pieces sealing is recommended and I will demonstrate that today.

Remaining sessions - Plan your next projects and make the necessary pieces to complete them.
