Supplies:

-a small sketchpad and drawing pencil for making thumbnails.

-art reproduction and “how to paint” type books; see suggestions in class.

-an assortment of soft and stiff brushes from flats, rounds, and filberts in a range of sizes

-primed & stretched canvases; sizes determined by how large you can carry in your car. Start out with 11”x 14”, 16” x 20 and 18” x 24”. Anything larger may be cumbersome for this course. 4 to 5 canvases should be enough for this session.

-bring smaller additional canvas boards for practicing techniques; 9” x 12” is a good size.

-palette: disposable palettes such as foam plates, paper palettes, wax or freezer paper.

-palette knife: at least one chisel shaped metal knife to begin with.

-odorless Turpenoid for oils that are not water-based

-oil medium such as liquin or stand oil for oils that are not water-based

-for water-based oil paints get their own brand of medium

-for acrylics; acrylic glazing liquid or matte medium. I like the Golden brand gloss and satin the best.

-for acrylics get one jar of light molding paste.

-paper towels and Ziploc bags for clean-up and carry-out

-storage containers for water, turps and medium such as salsa glass jars with lids

-small liquid soap

-large carry-all for your paintings and an Artbin for your supplies

Paint colors: the names of paints are all different, but here is a recommended list with comparative names for either oil or acrylic paints. If you want to tailor your own palette, bring all of your paint in and we can supplement as we go.

Course Objectives:

Demonstrations will include “underpainting” and “overpainting” along with transparent and impasto techniques. We will learn composition through still life and landscape art reproductions. The techniques will be how to blend values and create glazes with clear hues. We will include a portrait study using a photographic reference in the style of your choice.

Both oils and acrylics can be used in this course, but it will be easier for you to choose one medium each week for ease of transportation. The acrylics will ry faster and the oils will need a couple weeks to dry, so you can bring whichever canvas is dry and ready to work on.
