Supply List
You can feel
free to use whatever supplies you normally use. I do recommend
working on good paper( Arches, Fabriano) and using artists grade
paints if possible. You will be much happier with the results you
get using good tools than using some of the student quality paper
and paints and struggling with them. The cheaper paper doesn’t
absorb the paint as consistently and the student grade paints are
not as bright and transparent.
It will be
important to bring your own photo reference material to class each week, so start looking for photographs
that you would like to use for painting inspiration. Feel free to
bring whatever subject matter you like. I’d prefer you to use
your own photo’s instead of photo’s from a magazine.
In addition to
your paper, paints, palette, brushes, water container and paper
towels or tissues, you will also want to bring a sketch pad( at
least 5 x 7), pencil( #2 is fine)& eraser to class. Scotch tape and
scissosr will be needed for an exercise week 3.
If you are new
to watercolor and don’t have supplies consider the following:
Watercolor paper( Arches or
Fabriano recommended)- either individual sheets( and a board to
attach them to) or a watercolor block. 140 lb cold press
paper. A 10 x 14 block is great if you are just starting out. It is
large enough and easy to work with.
Watercolor paints
Recommended, but not mandatory colors-ultramarine blue, cobalt blue,
cerulean blue, sap green, thalo/winsor green, alizarin crimson,
burnt sienna, yellow ochre, cadmium orange, permanent rose, Indian
yellow, aureolin or lemon yellow .
A
palette for mixing- art
supply stores carry white plastic palettes with lids which are very
practical( e.g. Robert Wood, John Pike palettes)
2 Plastic cups for
water
Brushes- but bring at
least 1 large( 1” ) flat brush for washes and a round brush( #10 or
12 is fine) .These should be watercolor brushes, so if you’re asking in the store, be sure to
mention that so you don’t get oil/ acrylic brushes by mistake- they
are too rough for the watercolor pape.
