Pencil set - Pencil sets come in various packs covering the
range of hardness anywhere from 6h-9b. A good set to purchase would
include 4h-4b. If you want to buy individual pencils, I'd recommend a
2H, HB, 2B, 4B and 6B.
Eraser - kneaded eraser
Regular Eraser - I don't recommend 'gum' erasers as they are
very crumbly and messy. Any rubber or vinyl eraser is fine.
Charcoal pencil - doesn't have to be a set, but some sets are
very affordable and include a white charcoal pencil and/or a sepia
colored pencil and/or a kneaded eraser.
Paper - A decent sized sketchbook. No smaller than 9x12.
We'll be doing lots of exercises that may or may not be 'keepers'.
"Biggie' is a good studio priced brand. Strathmore and/or Canson make
nicer papers but they cost a little more. Places like Utrecht and
Binders also sell reams of paper at very reasonable prices. It's a LOT
of paper, but a great buy and you can keep the loose sheets in a folder,
portfolio etc.
Drawing Pen - Again, doesn't have to be a whole set. Sakura
(better known as Micron) makes a nice set in sizes from 00, 05, 08 etc.
Or, you can buy almost any black pen by 'Pilot'. If you have a
favorite brand or set, that's fine. It's a personal choice.
Optional:
- Ruler
- Drawing board (look around, don't pay more than $10).
- Portfolio for carrying drawings. - Again, doesn't have to be a
zippered leather case, they come in cardboard, or even a poster
board folded in half will keep charcoal off your car seats.
