Eight Ways to Start a Painting

4 - 8 sheets of paper either 18x24 or 22x30 Lenox 100 or other watercolor paper

 WE WILL BE STARTING 4 TO 8 PAINTINGS - WE WILL NOT BE COMPLETING ALL OF THEM.  IF YOU TEND TO WORK SLOWER - YOU MAY WANT TO USE THE SMALLER 18X24 PAPER AND ONLY BRING 4 OR 6 PIECES OF PAPER.  IF YOU TEND TO WORK A BIT FASTER AND LIKE LARGER WORK BRING 8 PIECES OF 22X30 PAPER.

Drawings: Please bring 3 or 4 simple contour drawings of any subject you want - something with a nice division of space and rhythm or movement

            Acrylic Paint:

cadmium yellow light
yellow oxide or yellow ochre
mars black
ultramarine blue - red shade or French ultramarine blue
thalo blue or pthalo blue - green shade
thalo crimson - made by Grumbacher only
or Acra Crimson by Liquitex
or Quinacra Red by Utrecht only        
cadmium red light
napthol crimson
thalo green or pthalo green - blue shade
dioxzine purple
titanium white - a large tube (do not buy liquitex basic)
hookers green
raw sienna
 

You may bring any other colors you wish - but this gives you a basic color spectrum.

1 Disposable Palette for Acrylic Paint (needs to be water resistant)

1 Roll of Masking Tape or Drafting Tape for edges of paintings

Soft cloths for water

Brushes:

Chip Bristle Brushes (available at Lowe's or Home Depot)

1 - 3 inch brush
1 - 2 inch brush

Any other bristle brushes you have - you'll want a variety in size and kind

Any other kind of brush you have that you want to use with acrylic paint

You will want several brushes so that you have access to dry brushes

Mediums:

1 pint either matte or gloss medium (not gel medium, or you can bring it as an extra medium)

1 pint modeling paste

Drawing Materials:

Char-Kole sticks by Alpha Color - 2 or more
1 pencil - 2B, 4B or 6B
1 white wax crayon or white candle or wax resist stick
1 white pastel
1 magic rub eraser
1 box or package of kleenex

Texturizers:

1 plastic fork
1 plastic serrated knife
1 old expired credit card - driverís license - scraper
Bubble Wrap
Corrugated Cardboard
Stiff Wire Brush - used to clean a grill
Rough Sandpaper
Old toothbrush

Collage Materials:

white tissue paper
brown paper bag
2 old magazines

Optional Items:

You do not need to buy these - bring only if you have them and want them.  You will only need one or two of any of these.

Oil Pastels - any color
Colored Pencils - any color
Watersoluble Colored Pencils or Watersoluble Lead pencils
Soft Pastels - any color
Children's wax crayons - any color
Palette knifes or plastic scrapers (different kinds of edges)
Templates
Archival Magic Markers such as Le Plume
Watercolors
Inks - acrylic or otherwise
Color Shapers - any kind
Foam Brushes or Rollers
Gesso - pint or small bottle
Things to print with - bottle tops, boxes, bubble wrap, stamps. etc.
Rice papers
spray bottle for water or paint
alcohol
salt
