Etching: A Kitchen Sink Aproach A Workshop with Carol Webb

In this three-day workshop, students will learn the basics of etching using the toner transfer method. The class will also focus on image development using photos, patterns, textures, doodles, words and other curiosities.

Introduction to Cold Forging with Ben Dyer

Join Ben for this exciting workshop on cold forging, the hammering of nonferrous metals for the creation of jewelry. In this one-day workshop students will explore forging techniques and forms. Discussion topics will include; work hardening, tempering, annealing and tool preparation. Some preliminary shaping is done with tools, pliers and by hand. The class is taught with a verbal and pictorial presentation, models, demonstration of the techniques, forms to forge, and hands-on practice.

Thorn Theory 101: Incorporating organic materials into Jewelry Designs with Lena Marie Eschelle

In this workshop students will experiment with various techniques of incorporating spines, thorns and organic materials into jewelry. Topics will include setting, drilling, riveting and more. Discussions will include the similarities and differences of incorporating wood into your designs as compared to stone and metal. Students will have access to spines and thorns of different types of tree from the high desert of Argentina, including the palo borracho and the algarrobo. Consideration will be given to practicality and durability of design, as well as to the type of finish. Students will be encouraged to complete a fun pair of lightweight sterling and thorn earrings or a simple thorn brooch or ring. For students making post earrings, instruction on earring back construction will be provided. Skill Level: Beginning through Advanced - Two Beginning Jewelry and Metalsmithing classes at the Spruill Center for the Arts, or permission of the Department Coordinator. A $55 Materials Fee is payable to the instructor at the time of the workshop.
